Schoolhouse.world is a platform for free, peer-to-peer tutoring–where anyone, anywhere can receive live help, build their skills, and pay it forward by becoming a tutor themselves. In May 2021, schoolhouse lanuched a new design system. I joined the product team to help complete the remaining redesign and lead new features.
The five main web pages I worked on were all launched in the end of Q3, 2021 on schoolhouse.world.
Advancing users' learning and tutoring experience with a clear infrastructure
Refreshing the about page to showcase the company core values and mission to attract new users, fundraisers, and parents
Simplifying the process and clarifying the steps of submitting a certification to tutor on Schoolhouse.world
Designing the new interface of the company blog page and cover images for each blog post
Building a system of tutor trainings for tutor to level up their tutoring skills
Creating graphics and icons for websites, social media marketing, and blogs
1. Interview users for follow-ups on my redesigns and see what they like and dislike.
2. Work with engineers to refine some design details
3. Do a better job documenting my design process along the way
Being able to work at a small startup allows me to get involved in product discussions and participate in the decision-making process. I learned about product thinking and business strategy. Learning from my colleagues about how they think and ask questions, setting quarterly goals and roadmaps, and meeting with people outside of our organization with far more experience are valuable experiences for me. I got to understand why I’m designing certain features and how it fits into the bigger picture.
In the first few weeks, I felt stressed and uncomfortable during weekly stand ups because I didn’t have enough context about the project to share my opinions. I felt the urge to catch up and hit the ground running. Going into a new environment in the beginning is always a challenge for me, but I’m glad that I was able to realize it, talk about it with others, and seek opportunities to step out of my comfort zone.
We have a #high-five channel in slack that we shout out to team members whenever someone does something amazing.
Thanks to the product team and community for the support and encouragement. I have a fruitful and unforgettable summer internship. Schoolhouse will always hold a special place in my heart.
