Project Overview

This was a project completed during Nickelodeon + Adobe Creative Jam. The inspiration came from a game we loved to play when we were children. Three floating islands represent three main features of this app: learning and winning badges, showcasing the house, and visiting friends’ houses. The style is consistent with Nickelodeon's brand style, which is vibrant, and playful.

Project Outcome

Design an Apple iPad app that create a safe virtual world for kids aged from 11 - 13 years old to learn interesting topics, level up and connect with their friends in a meaningful way during the quarantine.

Onboarding Flow

If this is your first time using this app, we give you a short tour by briefly introducing the function of each island. Kids may receive a gift such as a free episode every time they open the app.

Learning Feature

The learning island is one of the main features of this app. Kids are encouraged to watch videos and learn essential knowledge about being safe in the pandemic, take quizzes, and earn badges. The badges they earn will be displayed in their houses so their friends will see them.

Decorating Feature

At their home island, users can decorate the interior of their homes by adding images, videos, favorite episodes, and badges.

Social Feature

At the friends playground, users can find their friends' homes and check out friends updates such as recently watched TV shows and uploaded photos.

Observations

My 11 years old brother is lonely, bored and distracted in class.

“I feel like he (my dad) will bring it home and spread it to all of us.”
—— Zara L, 14 years old

“We can try and connect virtually, but it's really - it's not the same.”
 —— Hana A, 12 years old

“I don’t get to spend as much time with my friends.”
—— Izzy P, 11 years old

Design Principles

1. Designing self-explanatory interfaces
2. Gamifying the experience
3. Giving clear instructions
4. Eliminating unnecessary functions

Problems

How might we relieve kids’ stress?
How might we educate them about staying safe during the pandemic?
How might we make the quarantine life more fun?
How might we gain kids’ parents trust?
